Carpet Planks – A Change From The ‘Standard’

New office carpet tile shapes...

The 1990s saw a revolution in carpet design with the arrival of the decorative carpet tile; The tiles was create ostensibly to allow access under raised access floors. There has been little innovation in design since then except for the ever increasing range of surface patterns and designs available. Until now.

The size and shape of individual tiles has always been generally limited to a ubiquitous 50 x 50cm size but some of the more forward thinking carpet manufacturers have finally brought out carpet tiles in plank format.

Carpet tiles in plank form

New plank tiles are available from Modulyss, Milliken, Interface and Vorwerk.

Vorwerk have also created Scale, a carpet tile that gives the designer a far greater freedom when it comes to designing a floorcovering solution. A series of panels with a range of dimensions allows the designer to place the tiles in an unlimited number of flooring arrangements.

Alongside these formats, Vorwerk have also produced Freescale, a line of tiles with irregular modular shapes. This variety in form has given designers the opportunity of creating a floor that is no longer restricted by the standard square tile and further more given them the opportunity to actually design the floor instead of purely specifying a certain colour and texture.  This change from the ‘standard’ will allow a greater variety in design available to the client, creating a more inspiring environment in which to work.
