The University of Northampton, London (UoNL), is a partner of UoN and one of only 50 Changemaker Campuses in the world. Changemaker status commits UoNL to develop knowledgeable graduates who are socially responsible, digitally proficient and career ready. The refurbishment of the sixth floor of the Import Building at Republic, E14, was to support this status with innovative active learning, and was the third project in a series of refurbishments that we managed for LCA over a period of around two-and-a-half years. It was completed for September 2020.
The brief was to create an entirely new look and feel and to house circa 550 students. The fire strategy for the building dictated the occupancy rate, and planning permission for additional louvres was needed to increase the amount of fresh air on the floor. We provided a high-level brief and, in partnership with an approved M&E consultant, a performance specification for the M&E. This information was used to run a competitive tender for the works to three D&B companies. We subsequently, and with the D&B companies design team, specified and tendered a separate furniture package to ensure best value.
